German Occupation of Montenegro: Issues for Boka Kotorska

After capitulation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 17 April 1941, Montenegro was occupied by Italian Army. By the decree of its King, Vittorio Emanuele III, the city of Boka Kotorska was annexed by Italy. Newly formed Provincia Bocche di Cattaro became part of the Governatorato di Dalmazia.

When Italy capitulated, German forces took the city and its strategically important coastline (at the time, it was speculated the area was a potential landing ground for possible Allied invasion). In times of German occupation Boka Kotorska had its own administration and post.

10 February 1944. Italian stamps of Imperiale set overprinted in letterpress with “Deutsche Militär-Verwaltung Kotor” and new value in Italian lira.

In total, 5.000 complete sets were overprinted in printing house Obod in Cetinje, Montenegro. Original stamps have watermark (crown). Inverted overprints are known in cases of:

  • 1 Lira in 25 Centesimi,
  • 1.50 Lira on 50 Centesimi.

Stamps were not postally used, cancelled stamps are from cancelled-to-order sets.
