The vision
Imagine having at your disposal a complete register of postage stamp varieties for every country in the world — updated daily, fully accessible anywhere and anytime on any device you use, and entirely free of charge.
With such a resource, you could examine your collection and duplicates for varieties you may not have noticed before. Hidden treasures might be waiting. You could enrich your collection with rare varieties and increase its value. Or you could help fellow collectors by sharing information with them.
For some countries, specialized philatelic literature is limited or even non-existent. By participating in this Wiki, you contribute to global philatelic research and help raise awareness of varieties among collectors. Above all, you become a co-creator of an extensive, specialized philatelic encyclopedia.
My colleagues and I decided to start by sharing our knowledge and collections. We hope this resource will be of use to you — and that you will join us in the worldwide community of philatelists.
With best regards,
Andrej Verbic
Why is this important?
According to estimates, about 48 million people worldwide are engaged in philately, spending approximately $10 billion per year on stamps alone (accessories necessary for collecting—such as catalogues, albums, stock books, and other supplies—represent additional expenditure in the global philatelic market). It is also estimated that around 10% of this amount is invested in rare items. Source: Wikipedia
The size of the market is far from trivial, and it affects millions of people. As in any other market, buyers and sellers are connected through a product — and what both parties know about that product determines the outcome of the transaction. Information is therefore the difference between a good deal and a bad deal, especially in a market as extremely fragmented as philately.
Having better insight into a product simply means having the ability to make better decisions. And that is precisely what we aim to achieve with this site.
