Types and varieties of Swiss postage stamps: National Exhibition 1939, Zürich

 

Switzerland, postage stamp paper types
Paper types:
(1.) long silk threads
(2.) short threads, ribbed gum.

Stamps were printed in photogravure by Courvoisier S. A. in sheets of 50 (10 X 5) and rolls (only 10 cents stamps in all three languages). Stamps from sheets and rolls differ in location of printer’s signature below the lower right frame.

Stamps were printed on two paper types:

  1. paper with long colored silk threads, gum smooth
  2. paper with small, fine silk threads, gum ribbed

Papers types are easy to differentiate as all stamps with denomination of 30 cents were printed on the first type of paper. Consult the table below:

Type I (sheets):

  • letter A in COURVOISIER S. A. to the right from letter V in HELVETIA.

Type II (rolls):

  • letter A in COURVOISIER S. A. to the left from letter V in HELVETIA,
  • inscriptions slightly thinner.
